The TSA is delighted to confirm that the University Hospital of Wales Cardiff will receive long-term funding for their NHS TSC Clinic, following an application to the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSSC).
The Cardiff TSC Clinic is vital to many of the TSC community members living throughout Wales, with the clinic being the only dedicated NHS TSC Clinic within the country. Long-term funding of the Cardiff TSC Clinic means that TSC community members living in south Wales can now be confident that they will continue to receive care within the nation from those who are experts in the condition. TSC community members living in north Wales have ongoing access to services provided at Alderhey Hospital in Liverpool.
The welcomed news comes after years of uncertainty around the future of the clinic, with previous doubts about whether the clinic could continue to operate, despite the dedication and expertise of the TSC clinicians at the hospital, and the significant need and popularity of the Cardiff TSC Clinic for the TSC community throughout south Wales.
Long-term funding and certainty for the Cardiff TSC Clinic has been achieved following very hard work from the clinic, those in the TSC community, the TSA and members of WHSSC.
Louise Fish, Joint Chief Executive of the Tuberous Sclerosis Association, said: “The specialist TSC clinic at University Hospital Wales Cardiff is a lifeline for people living with TSC and their families, who will be delighted to hear that funding has been secured to ensure the long term future of the clinic. We would like to thank WHSSC for listening to the views of those who use the service, and for responding in such a positive way”.
The Cardiff TSC Clinic operates only thanks to the work of the TSC clinicians and professionals who give their time and expertise to make it possible. The TSA gives our heartfelt thanks to everyone within the Cardiff TSC Clinic for their ongoing efforts to diagnose, manage and treat TSC within Wales.
The TSA recommends that everyone diagnosed with TSC is referred to a TSC Clinic. Read more about the TSC Clinics, including how to be referred, here.
